3.9Trustpilot(9,652)

betterhelp is the biggest name in online therapy - a subscription platform that matches you with a licensed therapist for weekly live sessions (video, phone or live chat, your choice) plus messaging between sessions. betterhelp itself reports 31,739 therapists on the platform and more than 6.6 million people helped - those are its own numbers, but the scale is real, and it shows in how fast matching and re-matching work. On Trustpilot it holds 3.9 across 9,652 reviews - solid, but the mixed band, not the stellar one; praise for accessibility and therapist quality runs alongside fit and billing complaints. It's talk therapy only - no psychiatry or medication management - but the old no-insurance knock is out of date: betterhelp now accepts insurance, with copays cited from around $23/session for covered members, alongside self-pay subscriptions (commonly with a first-month discount) and a financial-aid questionnaire. Self-pay cost still varies by location and we haven't verified current rates, so confirm your number - covered or not - at signup. One more thing an honest review can't skip: in 2023 betterhelp settled with the FTC over sharing user data with advertisers - the company has since updated its practices, but if data privacy is a top concern for you, read its current privacy policy before signing up.

4.4Trustpilot(2,370)

Talkspace pairs the subscription-therapy format (live sessions plus messaging) with two things betterhelp doesn't have: psychiatry with medication management, and insurance acceptance. Many major insurance plans and employee-assistance programs cover Talkspace, which can turn therapy from a significant monthly out-of-pocket cost into a copay - for eligible plans, that changes the affordability math entirely. Talkspace says most insured members pay a $0 copay - its own claim, but one your eligibility check confirms or denies in minutes - and the app-based format means 24/7 access to your therapy room, not just session slots. It also carries the strongest verified customer rating in our online-therapy coverage: 4.4 on Trustpilot across 2,370 reviews (ahead of betterhelp's 3.9). Coverage is plan-specific, so run its eligibility check with your insurance details before assuming anything. We haven't verified Talkspace's current self-pay rates, so check those on its site if you're paying out of pocket.

1.5Trustpilot(770)

headspace is the app that took meditation mainstream: guided sessions for stress, focus and sleep, structured courses, sleepcasts, and lately Ebb, an AI companion - all in a famously well-designed subscription app that headspace says has passed 105 million downloads. Two honest lines have to be drawn. First, the app is mental fitness, not mental-health treatment - but headspace now also offers actual online therapy that accepts insurance, with a coverage check on its site (HSA/FSA eligible too), alongside the coaching and EAP services it sells through employers. Second, its Trustpilot profile stands at just 1.5 across 770 reviews - a strikingly low number for so popular an app, and we show it as-is; weigh it alongside the app-store popularity headspace cites, and read recent reviews yourself before subscribing. We haven't verified current pricing for the app or therapy; both are on headspace's site.

What is the best online therapy platform for women?

betterhelp is our top pick because the two things that matter most here - a therapist you actually click with, and sessions that fit around a full life - are where it's strongest: the largest network in the category, a therapist-gender preference and your specific concerns asked at intake, matching in as little as 2 days, video, phone or chat sessions with messaging in between, and free switching until the fit is right. Talkspace is the pick if your insurance covers it or medication may enter the picture (it offers psychiatry on-platform, relevant for postpartum and perinatal care). headspace is the daily practice for stress and sleep alongside - or before - therapy.

Can I choose a female therapist online?

Yes. The platforms we compare ask about therapist-gender preference during intake, along with the concerns you want to work on and, on some platforms, faith or cultural background, and match you accordingly from clinicians licensed in your state. If the first match isn't right, switching is free and normal - finding the right therapist takes more than one try more often than not.

What do women commonly seek online therapy for?

The concerns online therapy handles best are the common, treatable ones - and several cluster in women's searches:

 • Anxiety and burnout - skills-based approaches like CBT translate especially well online; see our anxiety page.
 • Postpartum and perinatal mood changes - therapy first, with a psychiatric clinician involved where medication is appropriate (Talkspace has one on-platform).
 • Relationship and family strain - individual work, or couples and family formats on our family therapy page.
 • Life transitions - career change, caregiving, divorce, loss - where a consistent weekly rhythm matters more than the format.

What does online therapy for women cost?

Same honest rule as everywhere on this site: we don't quote prices we haven't verified, and cost depends on platform, plan and insurance. Run the coverage checks first - Talkspace's eligibility check (a claimed $0 copay for most insured members), betterhelp's at signup (copays cited from around $23/session for covered members, with a financial-aid questionnaire for self-pay), and headspace's for its therapy service - and check whether your employer's EAP includes covered sessions. Our cost guide explains the models.

When is in-person the better call?

Three honest cases: you want to be in a room with someone, you need higher-intensity or coordinated care (severe or complex conditions, or care that must link with local doctors), or you don't have reliable privacy at home. Anything involving safety concerns or crisis calls for immediate help, not an intake queue - in the US, call or text 988, free and open 24/7. Outside those, online therapy is a legitimate, evidence-supported starting point; see our full platform comparison.
